• With today’s growing technical complexity in the field of Aerospace and Defense, the challenge is no longer generating information but rather understanding information. Discussion will center on how artificial intelligence is being applied in the design, development and support of today’s aircraft. The utilization of digital engineering tools in the development life cycle will also be discussed and how these tools help accelerate the design cycle and manage complexity.


  • For a number of years, I've been privileged to have a part in developing a new kind of aircraft to provide a new kind of service.

    As we've pursued this mission, we've encountered challenges and opportunities that we've met in creative and disciplined ways. Often this means detangling some complex problem or breaking down some impediment to reach a milestone or set a precedent.

    My part of this undertaking focuses on building assurance and approval pathways for new safety-critical technologies. Sometimes, we encounter walls. In this talk, I'll share some experience in contending with walls of various flavors in the course of turning an idea into reality in the civil aviation safety context. We've made it around, over, under, or through a number of them, and I'll also share some things we've learned in the process.


  • We can’t do the same thing we’ve always done and expect better results. Innovation is the process of challenging our assumptions, methods, and deliverables in order to make meaningful change in the way capabilities are delivered. Innovation takes many forms across academic, industrial, and governmental aviation work, and has become a major force driving changes in aircraft function, airspace system capabilities, and operating procedures.

    While these efforts provide opportunities to rapidly and dramatically change aviation innovation must be accompanied by accountability for solutions, systems, and protection of the public interest. How can you be accountable for innovation in your organization?
